Abusing substances, or other behaviors, can lead to a serious addiction problems. The sooner you catch it and work on developing healthier coping skills the better. Symptoms and behaviors may include:
- Regularly using: most days, daily or multiple times a day
- Intense urges for alcohol, drugs, or behavior
- Denying it is a problem, but knowing deep down it is
- Needing more of the substance/behavior to get the same effect
- Making certain that you maintain a supply or can do behavior
- Not meeting obligations and responsibilities
- Doing things you wouldn’t normally do; stealing or lying
- Focusing extensive time and energy on getting, using, or behaving
- Withdrawal symptoms when not using or actively in behavior
- Failed attempts to quit
